How to help our planet this Earth Day

Many of us are concerned about what the future holds for our planet Earth.

With climate change, pollution and the environmental impacts of mining showing no signs of slowing down, it is understandable that we are unsure as to what we can do to reduce our impact.

This Earth Day, April 22, a global climate summit will be convened to discuss these issues, but what can we do at home?

Here's some top tips, suggested by the experts at earthday.org:

1. Choose reusable products over single-use plastic

It's estimated that we use 4 TRILLION plastic bags each year worldwide, with most being used for only 10-20 minutes. Plastic is made of fossil fuels and can survive in landfill for up to 1,000 years! Most plastic can’t be recycled curb side, and only 1% are recycled in the soft plastics bin at grocery stores. So remember to bring your reusable bags next time your shopping and pack some reusable cutlery so you don't need to use the single-use kind next time you're out.

2. Make your next meal plant-based

Our food system accounts for more than a quarter of ALL greenhouse gas emissions, making animal agriculture one of the largest contributors to climate change. Shifting to a plant-based diet and avoiding animal products relieves our planet of this ecological burden. A plant-based burger generates 90% less greenhouse gases, has 99% less water impact and has 93% less impact on land use.

3. Get out in the garden

Trees filter the air and stave off the effects of climate change. Trees also reverse the impacts of land degradation and provide food, energy and income to communities. At a grass roots level (pardon the pun), growing your own food in your backyard, planting more native trees and plants and getting a compost bin all help with reducing the strain on our planet. Your carbon footprint will be reduced, native bees will thrive and you'll be creating less landfill.

4. Take action

Have conversations about the environment with your family, friends, neighbours and coworkers. Post about Earth Day, climate change and other environmental movements on social media and join the earthday.org community. Keep it positive and share this blog post with others that might want to make a change to help our precious planet.
